Music Icons Behind the Soundtrack

They’ve shaped the sound behind the stars—and continue to inspire it. With exceptional talent and lasting contributions, they’ve toured the world, played on records you’ve heard a hundred times, and brought musical brilliance into every room they’ve entered.

Many of the musicians, actors, singer-songwriters, composers, arrangers, and sidemen shown here were part of the soundtrack I grew up with. For years, I’ve collected the vinyl records they played on, hunting down the names hidden deep in the liner notes. Years later, my journey came full circle as I got to meet, photograph, and document these very artists.

Some hold legendary status in their own corners of the world, celebrated at home even if global fame eluded them. Yet, their creative DNA is found everywhere. Together, their sounds, songs, and creative instincts helped shape the foundation of countless iconic recordings.These photographs are a small tribute to the artists whose work has meant so much to me, and to music itself.

Some are sidemen to the stars, others are celebrated artists in their own right—each deserving recognition for the creative brilliance that often lives just outside the spotlight—and sometimes just beyond the frame.
